Karli’s
Story

One of our original members, Karli has been a part of CrossFIt 405 since 2010. Growing up playing sports and with a military background, she considered herself to be in decent shape.

Since starting at CF405, she realized the CrossFit helped her become much stronger and faster. After that, she was hooked.

When we asked her why she started CrossFit, she said, “In 2008 I was in Virginia for training. One of the guys in my class was telling me about this website that posts one workout per day and everyone does the same workout. I thought, “Well that sounds dumb.”

I met him at the track on a crisp Saturday morning. The WOD was 4 RFT: 35 Air Squats. 400m run. I did it and wanted to die. I was still so sore on Monday morning that I fell out of the company run, which I never do. I grew up playing sports and considered myself to be in decent shape. CrossFit made me realize I could be much stronger and faster. I was hooked.”

When we asked her about her experience at CrossFit 405 and what it’s been like, she said, “It’s been awesome. I joined pre Aaron O’Neil. The gym was tiny and there were not many members. Not many of the OG’s are still around. I wouldn’t trade those days for anything.

I love what Aaron did with the gym. When we expanded on Hudson, it literally quadrupled our size. We started hosting some small competitions and having get-togethers. When the gym expanded, so did the camaraderie. Holiday parties, weddings, and babies! There was one time when I was afraid to drink the water at 405.”

Why did you start CrossFit?

In 2008 I was in Virginia for training. One of the guys in my class was telling me about this website that posts one workout per day and everyone does the same workout. I thought, “Well that sounds dumb.” I met him at the track on a crisp Saturday morning. I was hooked.

Also, I’m super lazy. I love walking in to the gym and being told exactly what to do.

Tell us about your experience as a member at CrossFit 405? What's it been like?

It’s been awesome.

There was one time when I was afraid to drink the water at 405.

Take us back to when you first started CrossFit. Tell us what that was like in the beginning?

Terrible. If something fell on the floor, it stayed. It took me about 3 months to feel comfortable with all the movements and not look like a complete idiot.

What's different for you now? How have things changed for you since starting CrossFit?

I used to train specifically for the Army Physical Fitness Test. Push ups, sit ups, and a 2-mile run. Dang near maxing the test was a side effect of CrossFit. I didn’t train specifically for it anymore.

I’m definitely stronger and faster. I’m considered the old lady now for Army standards. I’m 38 and still scoring higher than all the females and about 3/4 of the males in my company.

What specific goals have you accomplished since starting CrossFit?

My weight has fluctuated from 147 to 171 while doing CrossFit. Nutrition is definitely key. I don’t participate in any of the nutrition competitions but I believe being around healthy people makes me want to be better.

What was the hardest part or the biggest obstacle you faced along the way?

Realizing the only person I’m competing with is myself.

Has it been worth it? Why or why not?

Absolutely! I met some of my best friends at 405!
