CrossFit 405 is my first exposure to CrossFit in general. I started doing this because I was looking for something challenging. I was a little bored of my typical gym routine. Plus, my overall self-esteem was starting to dwindle, and I thought this would help (spoiler alert: it did!).

I moved to Oklahoma City in March of 2020. I was very unfamiliar with the area (and the state in general). In May, I looked up “CrossFit near me” on Google. Up came CrossFit 405 so I checked out their Instagram late one night. I liked what I saw, messaged the account, and by the the next morning I had already gotten a response.

If someone was just getting into CrossFit, I would tell them all the great things I’ve experienced since joining. I would tell them about how my confidence has boosted, my strength has grown, and my mental health has gotten so much better! It gets hard sometimes, and on some days you might not want to go to class. But the biggest obstacle you face is you – so don’t let yourself get in the way of who you want to become.

Why did you start CrossFit?

Tell us about your experience as a member at CrossFit 405? What's it been like?

It’s hard to put into words what my experience has been like, but I’ll throw two words out there that I would use to describe it: Challenging and Uplifting. These two go hand-in-hand because on the days I feel the most challenged (such as finding it difficult to get through the workout) are the days I find myself being the most uplifted (such as my teammates cheering me on or coaches shouting words of positivity). CrossFit 405 has truly been a life-changing experience for me, and I’m so happy I’m apart of this team.

Take us back to when you first started CrossFit. Tell us what that was like in the beginning?

In the beginning, I literally had no idea what I was doing. I found myself looking around at what other people were doing and just praying that my movements were correct.

What's different for you now? How have things changed for you since starting CrossFit?

Now, I am way more confident in my ability to perform the workouts. That isn’t to say I’m not asking for ways to improve, however. I always ask for feedback from the coaches! CrossFit has obviously been great for my physical health – my body is more toned now and I’ve developed more muscles, especially in my legs. But CrossFit has done wonders for my mental health! I struggle with anxiety and it hasn’t been easy living on my own in a new city and state. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I find solace in the fact that I am a part of a welcoming and embracive group like CrossFit 405. I look forward to seeing the same smiling, friendly faces every day.

What specific goals have you accomplished since starting CrossFit?

The biggest accomplishment for me is the fact that I have been going so consistently since I began. One of my goals when I first started was to set a schedule for myself and stick to it. I go at least five times a week (sometimes six) and I’m just really proud of myself for sticking with it and not giving up when I see that a tougher workout is scheduled for that day.

What was the hardest part or the biggest obstacle you faced along the way?

The hardest part that I’ve faced along the way was definitely mastering the movements – in particular, power snatches and overhead squats. I’m still not an expert in these movements, but I found that staying after class and working one-on-one with a coach has been extremely beneficial.

Has it been worth it? Why or why not?

Yes, 100% worth it! CrossFit 405 has helped in so many ways. In the last five months, I have become so much more confident in who I am. My full-time job is in sales, and my CrossFit confidence has definitely shined through in my career!
